Montenegro is a country in Southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. Montenegro's independence was recognised by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. In June 2006 Montenegro declared its independence following a referendum.

Filip Vujanović
President of Montenegro, 2002–2018
Filip Vujanović served as the 3rd president of the Republic of Montenegro under Serbia and Montenegro from 2002 to 2006, and the 1st president of independent Montenegro from 2006 to 2018. Vujanović joined the Democratic Party of Socialists in 1993.

Milo Đukanović
President of Montenegro, 2018–2023
Milo Đukanović served as the president of Montenegro from 1998 to 2002 and from 2018 to 2023. He also served as the Prime Minister of Montenegro (1991-1998, 2003-2006, 2008-2010 and 2012-2016). He was defeated by Jakov Milatović, a former economy minister, after the presidential run-off held on 2 April 2023.

Jakov Milatović
President of Montenegro, 2023 to today
Jakov Milatović is the incumbent president of Montenegro, serving since May 2023. He previously served as the minister of economic development in the cabinet of Zdravko Krivokapić from 2020 to 2022. He is the third president of Montenegro since the country's independence in 2006.

Culture
- The Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
- The capital and largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is the Old Royal Capital and cultural centre.
- It is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, and the Central European Free Trade Agreement. Montenegro is also a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean, and has been in the process of joining the European Union since 2012.
