County of Holland

The County of Holland was a state of the Holy Roman Empire from its inception until 1433. From 1581 onward it was the leading province of the Dutch Republic until the Batavian Revolution in 1795. Its territory corresponds roughly with the current provinces of North Holland and South Holland in the Netherlands.

Culture
- Under the Burgundians, Holland's trade developed rapidly, especially in the areas of shipping and transport.
- In the early decades of the uprising, many refugees from Flanders and Brabant settled in the big cities of Holland, and the dialect of urban Holland later became the standard language of the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium.
- In a society dependent on trade, freedom and tolerance were considered essential.
