Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is a country in Central Europe. Modern Slovenia emerged in June 1991, when the country declared independence from Yugoslavia. After the brief Ten-Day War, it became a sovereign state. Slovenia is a member of the Council of Europe, the European Union, the United Nations, NATO, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and other associations in the global community.

Milan Kučan
President of Slovenia, 1991–2002
Milan Kučan was the first President of Slovenia, from 1991 to 2002. Kučan strongly opposed the preservation of Yugoslavia through violent means. Slovenia declared its independence on 25 June 1991, and on 26 June the Yugoslav People's Army embarked on troop movements that later escalated into the Ten-Day War.

Janez Drnovšek
President of Slovenia, 2002–2007
Janez Drnovšek was Prime Minister of Slovenia from 1992 to 2002, with a short break in 2000, and President of Slovenia from 2002 to 2007. Drnovšek served as chairman of the Collective Presidency from 1989 to 1990. While he was chairman of the presidency, he was also chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement and the commander of the Yugoslav People's Army.

Danilo Türk
President of Slovenia, 2007–2012
Danilo Türk served as President of Slovenia from 2007 to 2012. He was the first Slovene ambassador to the United Nations, from 1992 to 2000, and was the UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs from 2000 to 2005.

Borut Pahor
President of Slovenia, 2012–2022
Borut Pahor served as President of Slovenia from 2012 to 2022. He previously served as Prime Minister of Slovenia from 2008 to 2012. He defeated the incumbent Danilo Türk in a runoff election held on 2 December 2012, receiving roughly two-thirds of the vote.

Nataša Pirc Musar
President of Slovenia, 2022 to today
Nataša Pirc Musar has served as the President of Slovenia since December 2022. She is the first woman to hold the office in the country's history. In the second round of the 2022 presidential election, she defeated Anže Logar of the Slovenian Democratic Party and was elected President of Slovenia.

Culture
- Slovenia's architectural heritage includes 2,500 churches, 1,000 castles, ruins, and manor houses, farmhouses, and special structures for drying hay, called hayracks (kozolci).
- Four natural and cultural sites in Slovenia are on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
- Slovenian cuisine combines culinary traditions from Central Europe, particularly Austria and Hungary, with influences from the Mediterranean.
