The Lê dynasty was the longest-ruling Vietnamese dynasty, and it ruled Đại Việt from 1428 to 1789 with a break between 1527 and 1533. The dynasty officially began in 1428 with the enthronement of Lê Lợi after he drove the Ming Chinese army from Vietnam. The dynasty reached its peak during the reign of Lê Thánh Tông and declined after his death in 1497.

Culture
- Written Chinese was the predominant writing language in Vietnam throughout the Lê dynasty, although written vernacular Vietnamese using chữ Nôm became increasingly popular in the 17th century.
- Woodcarving was especially highly developed and produced items that were used for daily use or worship.
- From 1426 to 1527 the Lê dynasty held 26 imperial examinations in the capital.
